Teaching package "Al-Manhaj"

 
The Al-Manhaj teaching package offers three levels of difficulty: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The beginner level allows one to acquire basic language skills. Having completed this level, one will be able to understand and produce simple expressions, both in speaking and writing.
The lessons are chosen based on several characteristics of contemporary Arabic: an absence of short vowels in writing, avoiding declensions and the ta marbuta whenever possible, as well as frequent use of nominal sentences and expressions from different dialects.
The dialogues and texts that begin each lesson are artificial and therefore represent only the first stage of the learning process. The goal is for the student to eventually gain access to authentic documents with richer content : literary excerpts, press articles, television and radio broadcasts …
The “beginner” level consists of five sequences that revolve around various themes of communication including greetings and polite expressions; introducing oneself and meeting someone else; giving and receiving information; orienting oneself in a city; using expressions of time; the body, sensations, the expression of feelings; the family … all of these are presented in the context of Arab culture: its codes, traditions, customs, etc.

Each sequence is divided into lessons based on the same theme. The first sequence contains three, while the four other sequences each contain two lessons. The lessons from the same sequence are complementary. The sequences themselves are complementary as well and assure rigorous lexical and grammatical progress. They can also be studied independently or in a different order, according to the needs of the teacher and students in classes of various sizes.
Writing practice and phonetic exercises begin in the first two sequences, or the first five lessons. For practical reasons (a class with only one teacher), the translations of the texts and dialogues are placed in the appendix at the end of the workbook. The answers to the exercises, which are essential for students teaching themselves, are published in a separate manual which is available by order. Finally, a CD containing all the recordings necessary for oral practice also accompanies the workbook.
